1 February 2018

Neurobiologist, Kim Do Cuénod has specialized in the etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia. She is Head of the Schizophrenia Research Unit and Head of the Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience at the CHUV Department of Psychiatry, Prilly. She was nominated UNIL Professor on March 1, 2017.
After studying chemistry, Kim Do Cuénod completed her doctorate in molecular biology at ETH Zurich. She joins the Brain Research Institute of the University of Zurich, where she is pioneering the understanding of neuroglial interactions. Her strong desire to establish a bridge between basic research and clinical psychiatry led her to Lausanne, where she participated in the creation of the Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience.
[…] In collaboration with the Department of General Psychiatry of Prof. Philippe Conus, she has highlighted the role of oxidative stress in the SZ disease, with effects on both the proper functioning of inhibitory neurons and myelin, crucial for cognitive functions. The hypothesis was validated via animal models, and the proof of concept was carried out through two clinical studies, using antioxidants to treat patients at different stages of the disease. […]
In addition to her research, the professor is very involved in education, e.g. through the recent creation of a translational psychiatry program, targeting an MD-PhD for psychiatrists.
