Explorer Christian Clot – Conference

Christian Clot has successively crossed the four most extreme environments of the planet, he will talk about his experience on the capacity of human adaptation in extreme conditions.
Sand, water, forest, mountains: the Franco-Swiss Christian Clot has traveled all kinds of terrain. His original curiosity for the Earth has become his object of scientific research: ‘how does man adapt to his environment?’ He embarked on an extraordinary challenge: 4 successive crossings of the 4 most extreme environments on the planet: the dry and hot desert of Dasht-e-Lut in Iran, the cold and humid sea channels of Patagonia, the hot and humid Amazon in Brazil and Eastern Siberia (dry, cold). He conducted and underwent experiments to study human adaptive capacities in real situations.
Humans are called upon to experience changes and crisis situations, sometimes violent. Sensations, feelings, emotions, decisions: these are the same processes that we wish to study the adaptive mechanisms in the field of mental health. The in situ study of cognitive and physiological reactions in a stressful environment is essential to this process.
After Christian Clot’s testimony, Professors Luc Mallet and Didier Grandjean will discuss the importance of emotional mechanisms in adaptation processes in extreme environments, the measures to quantify them and the importance of their regulation in these processes. They will explain why, in terms of mental health, the study of cognitive and physiological reactions in stressful environments is essential to better assist those who are affected and anticipate crises.
